LOVELY GEM SLIDER 1844-D QUARTER EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

Variety 5-I.

While common in lower grades, nice AU examples of the 1844-D quarter eagle are very scarce, and this date is rare in any Uncirculated grade. There are likely fewer than 10 known in all AU grades combined which would meet my definition of “choice and original.”

This example is clearly finer than nearly any 1844-D quarter eagle that I’ve seen in an MS61 holder. It has glowing rich yellow-gold color which is absolutely “right” for the issue and there is considerable luster seen on both sides. Some weakness of strike at the centers should not be confused for wear and this flatness is seen on many 1844-D’s. There are a few scuffs in the upper left obverse field and a reverse abrasion beneath the F in OF. This is one of my single favorite coins in the Indian Rocks Beach Collection.

Just three PCGS AU58 examples of this date have sold at auction since 1996 and the last piece to sell was offered all the way back in early 2006. A CAC approved PCGS MS61 realized $10,575 as Stack’s Bowers 2015 ANA: 10183.

If you want to own one single high-grade quarter eagle from this mint, you couldn’t do much better than this!

CAC has approved six in AU58 (including this one coin in 58+) with five finer.
