UNDERRATED CAC APPROVED PCGS MS61 1874 DOUBLE EAGLE

While very common in circulated grades, the 1874 is overlooked and scarce in the lower Uncirculated grades. It becomes rare in properly graded MS62 and it is nearly impossible to find in MS63 and higher. A hoard of 1874 double eagles entered the market earlier this year which made nice MS61 and MS62 examples more available than just a few years ago.

This nice 1874 is not from the hoard mentioned above and thus lacks the very deep Euro-look shown by those coins. It is totally original with vivid luster, rich natural golden-orange color and grade-limiting scuffs concentrated in the central left obverse field. This is a very solid coin for the grade.

Auction prices for non-CAC PCGS MS61 1874 double eagles have fluctuated widely in 2017 with lows at $2,640 and highs of over $4,000. In October 2016, a CAC approved NGC MS61 sold for $6,463 as Heritage 10/16: 5561.

This date has stabilized in price and I think nice PCGS/CAC 1874 double eagles in MS61 and MS62 are good values at the new lower levels.

CAC has approved 22 in this grade with just 3 finer.
