The rarity of this date in Gem Uncirculated is not well-known, but full-blown Gems such as this are legitimately scarce as shown by the low CAC population in MS65 and higher (just 5/3).

This is among the nicest business strike 1887 Threes I’ve seen with exceptional frosty luster underneath soft medium golden-orange color which is a bit deeper on the reverse than on the obverse. Were it not for a few light marks in the left obverse field, I honestly believe that this coin would have received consideration at the 65+ or even the 66 level.

There is but a single PCGS/CAC MS65 example of this date to have ever sold auction, and it realized $18,000 as Heritage 2024 ANA: 4298, after bringing $25,800 as Legend 5/2022: 233.
