Open 3 Variety.
The 1873 Open 3 is among the more available Type Two double eagles. It becomes progressively rarer as grades increase and MS62 to MS63 is the highest range in which this date is generally available.
This is a very clean and original example which would almost certainly grade MS63 were it not for a shallow scrape beneath Liberty's nose which extends to the eye. The color is a very pleasing rich yellow-gold with greenish pastels underneath.
From 2013 to 2017, Heritage sold seven CAC PCGS MS62+ 1873 Open 3 double eagles for sums ranging from a low of $3,290 to a high of $4,994.Then in November 2017, a lower-quality (but still PCGS/CAC MS62+) sold for a shockingly low $2,040. I'd like to think this was an outlier and that my asking price is sensible, given the quality of the coin.
This is an affordable yet visually stunning coin which is perfect for type purposes.
CAC has approved 220 in MS62 (including an unknown number in MS62+) with 33 finer.
