NICE CAC APPROVED 1872 DOUBLE EAGLE GRADED MS61 BY PCGS

The 1872 double eagle is a reasonably common issue in all circulated grades. In Uncirculated, it is nearly always seen in the MS60 to MS62 range and it is extremely rare in MS63 or finer.

This example has an extremely fresh and vibrant appearance and it lacks the somewhat dingy Euro appearance seen on hoard coins from this year. Both sides show excellent frosty mint luster below flashy natural rich golden-orange color. A cluster of marks in the left obverse field limit the grade but this piece is cleaner and more wholesome than other MS61 1872 double eagles which I have seen.

Six PCGS MS61 1872 double eagles have appeared for sale in 2017 and prices have ranged from a low of $6,600 in November (for a very heavily abraded piece) to a high of $9,400 in January (for a high end piece in an older holder).

The price jump from MS61 to MS62 for this date is substantial and, in my opinion, this pleasing CAC approved piece will work for nearly any higher quality set of Type Two double eagles.

CAC has approved seven in this grade with three finer.
