PCGS AU58 1869 DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1869 is the most available of the quartet of scarce Philadelphia issues made between 1868 and 1871. The 1869 becomes hard to locate in properly graded AU58 and it is rare in Uncirculated.

This frosty orange-gold example likely never entered circulation but it is "rubby" in the left obverse field and on the cheek of Liberty. Both sides are moderately abraded and the reverse on its own grades at least MS61 to MS62.

Only three PCGS AU58 1869 double eagles have sold at auction since early 2013 and the last example to sell brought $5,875 as Stacks Bowers 7/15: 6112.

If you can locate a PCGS MS61, it will cost you the better part of $15,000. For many collectors, this nice PCGS AU58 is just an all-around better value.
