RARE NGC AU55 1868 DOUBLE EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
The 1868 is the rarest Type Two double eagle from Philadelphia. It is not often available in the higher AU grades and it is very rare (and very expensive) in Uncirculated. Nearly every 1868 double eagle which I have seen in an AU55 holder has problems which preclude approval by CAC.
This is a really solid coin for the date and grade with far fewer abrasions than normal as well as a considerable amount of remaining mint luster. Both sides show pleasing natural medium butter-gold color with a splash of crimson at the central reverse.
Since September 2008, a scant four AU55 1868 double eagles have sold at public auction and none were CAC approved. The most recent APR is Heritage 3/13: 23201 which realized $6,463; it was graded by NGC.
When this series regains the popularity it had a few years ago, the demand for nice 1868 Type Two double eagles will increase and coins of this quality will be especially desirable.
CAC has approved two in this grade with nine finer.
