VERY SCARCE NGC AU58 1860-O EAGLE
The 1860-O is numismatically significant as the final No Motto eagle from the New Orleans mint. Only 11,100 were made and as coinage of this denomination didn't resume until 1879, this issue saw extensive circulation. In nice AU55, this date is scarce and it is very scarce if not actually rare in AU58.
This light yellow-gold example is unusual for the date in that it hasn't been scrubbed and it retains a considerable amount of natural mint luster. There are some scattered bag abrasions at the central obverse but these are far less detracting than normal for the date. To the best of my memory, this is the best 1860-O eagle I have offered since a PCGS MS62 I sold in 2016.
Since 2014, two NGC AU58 1860-O eagles have sold at auction. In July 2016, one brought $7,050 while another realized $6,756 in April 2014.
This is an important No Motto New Orleans eagle which should receive considerable attention from specialized collectors.
