HISTORIC 1854-S EAGLE IN PCGS AU58

The 1854-S is a numismatically significant issue due to its status as the first Liberty Head eagle from the brand-new San Francisco mint. This is an easy date to locate in grades through AU58 but properly graded AU58 coins are scarce and this is a very rare issue in Uncirculated with no more than three pieces currently accounted for.

This is an exceptional example for the date and grade. It is not one of the European hoard coins which entered the market in late 2016/early 2017 (those pieces are very dark) as is evidenced by its delightful medium green color with rose and orange-gold accents. The surfaces are choice save for one light old hairline from the rim to over the second star on the obverse.

No PCGS AU58 1854-S eagle has sold at auction since February 2007 when Goldberg sold one for $4,830.

If you can find a PCGS MS61, you are likely to pay over $15,000 and this is a big "if" given that in over 30 years of grading, the population stands at a whopping three coins--with none finer!
