This issue helped remedy a shortage of circulating gold coinage during the 1852-1853 Gold Rush era ane examples tend to show the effects of commerce.
This piece has the luster and detail of a higher grade but it was seemingly net-graded to its current AU50 status by some noticeable circulation marks on the obverse. The color is a pleasing medium green-gold with some reddish hues forming at the obverse border.
A comparable PCGS AU50 example recently sold at auction for $7,800 as Stacks Bowers 11/17: 10249. Only three PCGS AU50 1852 Assay $10's have sold at auction since the summer of 2007.
An important piece of Gold Rush history.
