RARE CHOICE AU 1883-CC EAGLE

The 1883-CC is the scarcest Carson City eagle struck after 1879. Of the 12,000 made, there are fewer than 300 known with most in the EF40 to AU50 range. Properly graded AU55′s are about the best available quality for this issue and there are no more than three or four extent in Uncirculated, the best of which grade MS61.

Strike and surface quality are a problem with this date and this specific coin is above-average in both respects. The surfaces are lustrous with light yellow-gold toning over well-defined details. Both sides show some scattered grade-defining marks including scattered contact marks in the obverse fields and a small reverse dig below the right wing.

No PCGS AU55 1883-CC eagle has sold at auction since Bowers and Merena 6/08: 3757 which realized $6,325. The last NGC AU55 to sell at auction was a choice “Euro” example which sold for a solid $7,638 as Stacks Bowers 3/16: 14195.

This is the first higher grade 1883-CC eagle that I have offered in over two years.
