RARE 1878-CC EAGLE

There are an estimated 70-80 known 1878-CC eagles from an original mintage of just 3,244. This date is unique in Uncirculated (an NGC MS63 is said to exist but I've never seen it) and I haven't handled one finer than AU55.

This piece has enough remaining luster to strongly suggest an AU50 grade but it is somewhat weakly struck at the central obverse. The light green-gold surfaces show an absence of the usual abrasions while the rims show no bumps.

No PCGS EF45 examples of the 1878-CC eagle have sold at auction since Heritage 9/11: 4391 realized $14,375; before this the last coin in this grade to sell was in May 2005.

This date is seldom offered for sale in any grade and almost never in Choice Extremely Fine.
