EXCITING NEWLY DISCOVERED CHOICE AU 1875-CC EAGLE
Winter 1-A.
The 1875-CC eagle is a scarce coin with likely no more than 100 or so known from an original mintage of 7,715. This issue saw active circulation in the Old West and today most survivors are in the VF-EF range. Full About Uncirculated coins are rare and properly graded AU55's are very rare. I know of only AU58 (see below) and a single Uncirculated coin graded MS62 by PCGS.
This exceptional coin is totally fresh to the market and it is by far the most original 1875-CC eagle which I have ever seen. It shows an excellent strike and very little wear with dramatic splashes of reddish toning on the obverse and less extensively on the reverse. The surfaces are exceptional with a near-absence of marks and the eye appeal is "all there." I honestly believe that this coin is closer to AU58 than its current AU55 but it is "too original" and may have been conservatively graded on account of its color.
Two other PCGS AU55 examples have sold at auction and both were inferior to this. One of these, offered as Heritage 4/08: 2475, brought $46,000 while the other, ex ANR 10/04: 832 and earlier from the Bass collection, realized $41,400. The Battle Born coin, offered as Lot 11025 in the Stacks Bowers 2012 ANA brought a strong $63,250 in spite of some signs of an old wiping.
This exciting new discovery takes its rightful place in the Condition Census for the issue and it also stakes a claim as one of the most singularly attractive better date CC eagles of which I am aware.
CAC has approved this one coin in AU55 with none finer.
