SCARCE PCGS/CAC AU55 1881-CC

The 1881-CC is by a significant amount the single scarcest post-1878 half eagle from Carson City. It is a tough coin to find in properly graded AU55, and it is rare in AU58. Uncirculated 1881-CC half eagles are very rare with seven graded as such by PCGS; this includes four in MS61, one each in MS62 and MS63, as well as a listing for an MS65 which I believe is a data entry error.

This lightly worn example shows a good deal of remaining luster, and were it not for some scattered light marks on the obverse, it would be a candidate to upgrade to AU58.

No PCGS/CAC AU55 1881-CC half eagles have been sold at auction since 2021 when two were available to Carson City half eagle collectors; they realized $14,688 (12/2021) and $13,000 (6/2021). In April 2022, Stack’s Bowers sold a non-CAC PCGS AU55 for $18,000.

CAC has approved eight in this grade with nine finer.

Ex Heritage 2014 FUN: 6751 ($8,225).
