CHOICE CAC APPROVED PCGS AU53 1874-CC HALF EAGLE
The 1874-CC is the most available of the pre-1879 half eagles from the Carson City mint. Accurately graded AU53 to AU55 pieces are quite scarce and in AU58, the 1874-CC is rare. Uncirculated pieces are extremely rare with an estimated three to five known. The last two APRs for an Unciruclated 1874-CC $5 (both PCGS MS62) were for $90k each!
This is a perfect coin for the grade with 100% natural color, unadulterated surfaces, and a better-than-average strike.
NO CAC approved PCGS 53 1874-CC $5 has ever sold at auction. In March 2023, a Gold CAC PCGS AU50 that I felt was an AU53 (but was nicer than this coin) brought a solid $18,600.
CAC has approved five in this grade with 11 finer.
