ULTRA POPULAR PCGS VF35 1838-C HALF EAGLE

HM-2, Winter-2, R-5.

The 1838-C is a standalone one-year type with the sole appearance of the Classic Head design seen on any half eagle from Charlotte. This issue is notably scarcer than its counterpart the 1838-D, and it is one of the scarcer half eagles from Charlotte in Nice AU and higher grades. The majority of the collector grade 1838-C half eagles that remain have been scrubbed and are very heavily abraded.

This is a distinctly above-average example for the date and grade with deep, even russet color seen on both sides. The detail is better than expected for a VF35, and the coin would be choice were it not for some scuffs i the lower right obverse field. In my opinion, this coin is nicer than an estimated 75% of the 1838-C half eagles I have seen in the VF grade range.

A PCGS VF35 with large PVC spots on the reverse sold for $7,250 as DLRC 1/2021: 7379. In January 2022, Heritage sold an NGC VF30 for $8,700. I graded the coin VF20 when I saw it in person.

In my opinion, this is a very solid collector grade example of the single most popular half eagle produced at the Charlotte mint.

PLEASE NOTE THAT I HAVE NOT SENT THIS COIN TO CAC.
