SCARCE PCGS/CAC EF45 1876-CC $5.00

It will come as a surprise to many collectors that the 1876-CC has the lowest mintage of an CC half eagle. Only 6,887 were made, and this date is considered to be scarce in nice EF45 and very scarce in the AU50 to AU55 range. PCGS has graded just two coins in Uncirculated: an MS62, and a spectacular MS66.

This is the single nicest EF45 1876-CC half eagle that DWN has ever offered. It has unblemished surfaces with natural medium green-gold color and contrasting flashes of reddish-gold in the protected areas. The lump on the throat of Liberty is mint-made and it seen on ever 1876-CC $5.

There have been just two PCGS/CAC EF 1876-CC half eagles sold at auction. An EF40 brought $16,800 as Stack’s Bowers 11/2022: 7101, while a very high-end EF45 (I grade it AU53) sold for $24,000 as Stack’s Bowers 2022 ANA: 3121.

If you are working on a set of high quality set of CC half eagles you no doubt are aware of how difficult it is to locate a nice 1876-CC.

CAC has apportioned four in this grade with five finer.

DWN collects sales tax when appropriate.
