There are very few more misunderstood Dahlonega half eagles than the 1840-D. It is very scarce—if not rare--with natural color and surfaces. It is also numismatically significant as the first half eagle from this mint with the revised second Liberty Head design and the mintmark now on the reverse. It is also one of just three Dahlonega issues with the Small Letters reverse; making it a distinctive and important type.
I can’t imagine a nicer circulated example of the 1840-D than this. It is 100% natural and has never been lightened or otherwise monkeyed with. The color is a rich honey-gold with great detail for the grade as well as minimal marks and light wear. In my opinion, this lovely coin wouldn’t seem silly in an AU%3 or even an AU5 holder…its that nice!
No PCGS/CAC AU50 1840-D half eagle has sold at auction since Heritage 4/2018: 5294 which brought $5,760 in a vastly less competitive market. In The 2018 ANA sale, a nice PCGS/CAC AU53 realized $7,200 but I feel my coin is better.
An outstanding coin in very respect.
CAC has approved four in this grade with 10 finer.
