RARE PCGS AU58 1844-C
The 1844-C is among the scarcest half eagles from Charlotte. It is very scarce in AU58, and very rare in Uncirculated with an estimated half dozen or so known.
This bright yellow-gold shows no real wear and has an excellent strike. The surfaces are clean with an absence of detracting marks in the fields as seen on so many examples of this tough issue.
A PCGS AU58 has not sold at auction since March 2007. A nice PCGS/CAC AU55+ from the Fairmont Hoard brought $15,600 in April 2022. The unappealing PCGS MS62+ that sold cheaply for $24,000 as Stack’s Bowers 2022 ANA: 7166 is the only Uncirculated 1844-C that has sold via auction since the beginning of 2011.
