SCARCE 1878-CC HALF EAGLE GRADED VF35 BY PCGS WITH CAC APPROVAL

The 1878-CC is among the scarcest half eagles from Carson City. It is not easy to locate a solid collector grade example, and one with CAC approval is especially hard to find as the majority of examples have been harshly cleaned.

This is a high-end coin for the grade. It has the feather detail of a coin at the EF40 requirements, but it is just a tiny bit too worn on the obverse to qualify as such. Suffice to say, it is among the best 1878-CC half eagles known in any VF grade, and this includes the Stack’s Bowers 4/2022: 5146 coin that brought a remarkable $38,400.

The SB April 2022 coin mentioned above is the sole PCGS VF35 1878-CC to sell at auction since 2005 and the only CAC approved piece at that grade. Stack’s Bowers 2022 ANA: 3126 was graded EF40 by PCGS and it brought a reasonable $26,400.

CAC has approved two in this grade with just six finer.
