RARE AND POPULAR 1870-CC $5 GRADED VF20 BY PCGS

The 1870-CC is the key issue among the various half eagles made at he Carson City mint. Its first-year-of-issue status gives it multiple levels of demand, and while its value has increased significantly over the past decade it still seems like a better value for the money that its expensive 1870-CC eagle and double eagle counterparts.

In my opinion, this coin faces up as a VF30 but it has been properly net graded on account of an old scrape running down from Liberty’s chin towards the truncation. Both sides show appealing dark olive-gold color with some contrasting reddish hues at the borders.

There have been a host of surprisingly nice low grade 1870-CC half eagles sold at auction in the last five+ years. In January 2022 an NGC/CAC VF25 that was quite ticky and not especially choice in my opinion still sold for a strong $45,600, while a heavily worn NGC/CAC VG10 still made $30,000 as Heritage 2021 ANA: 4146. And finally, a low-end non-CAC PCGS VF25 brought $31,200 in January 2021.

This coin represents the most affordable first-year Carson City gold coin of any denomination.
