1879-CC $5 GRADED AU53 BY PCGS AND APPROVED BY CAC
The 1879-CC is reasonably easy to locate in grades through AU55. Nice AU58 coins are scarce while this date is very rare in Uncirculated.
This coin is accurately graded, in my opinion, with the luster and naked-eye appearance of a 55 but with just a few too many shallow marks to qualify as such. This piece is undipped with a pleasing natural appearance.
No PCGS/CAC AU53 1879-CC half eagle has ever sold at auction. Since 2014, just a single non-CAC example in this grade had sold, and it brought $5,520 as Heritage 2021 ANA: 4151. Three PCGS/CAC AU55s have sold since late 2021, and each has realized close to $10k.
This seems like the Best Value Grade for this date.
