OUTRAGEOUS SUPERB GEM 1877 GOLD DOLLAR IN PCGS/CAC MS67
The 1877 gold dollar is less scarce than its original mintage of 3,900 business strikes would suggest. It is seen in all grades up through MS68 and even the most finicky buyer should be able to procure a scintillating example of this date.
A blend of fiery reddish highlights the obverse while the reverse is a more even rich yellow gold hue. Both sides are reflective but no quite enough so to properly designate this coin as Prooflike. Close examination of the overs with a 5x loupe reveals a tiny mark (possibly mint made in origin) in the left obverse field midway between the bases of the IT in UNITED and the portrait. This coin has 24/7 eye appeal and it makes me feel warm and fuzzy every time I look at it.
No CAC approved PCGS M67 1877 gold dollar has ever sold at auction and the last two non-CAC examples that sold at auction brought $9,694 (9/2018) and $9,400 (10/2017). The lovely Duckor coin, graded MS67+ by PCGS/CAC MS67 was purchased by DWN in 2015 for a client at a reasonable $12,338 while the PCGS/CAC MS68 Bender coin brought $20,400 in 2022.
A stunner and an ideal type representative for this design.
CAC has approved four in MS67 with another five finer.
