THE ONLY 1871 GOLD DOLLAR GRADED MS66+ BY PCGS

By 1871, the demand for gold dollars was diminished as evidenced by the small mintage of 3,900 business strikes. However, Gems are available as evidenced by the current PCGS populations for MS67/67+ and MS68 coins; eight of the former and three of the latter.

The obverse of this coin is simply fabulous with glowing satiny luster under a layer of natural light reddish-gold and rich yellow-gold colors. A tiny mark in the inner portion of the right obverse field is likely the reason why this coin isn’t in a 67 holder but it wouldn’t look out of place if it were graded as such one day.

Just a single 1871 gold dollar graded PCGS/CAC MS66 has sold a auction since 2004 and that was back in June 2021.

Pre-1880 US gold coins of this quality are extremely challenging to locate.

CAC has approved three in this grade with three finer.
