AFFORDABLE GEM 1866 GOLD DOLLAR

Gems of this issue are available as is demonstrated by the current PCGS population of 11 in MS65 with 19 (!) finer. Even when factoring in duplicate submissions, it is safe to say that at least a dozen—or possibly more— full-blown Gems are currently known.

1866 gold dollars are known with peculiar, strong die basining lines which can easily be mistaken for hairlines as well as conspicuous clashmarks. On this example, the dies were not clashed while the die basining lines are strong; especially on the reverse. A few mint-made planchet marks are seen on the obverse and there is a faint copper spot in the left obverse field.

The most current APR for a PCGS/CAC MS65 1866 gold dollar is $4,800 whcih was achieved by Heritage 12/2022: 53013.

CAC has approved three in this grade with six finer.
