RARE GEM 1853-O GOLD DOLLAR, PCGS MS65
In terms of its overall rarity, the 1853-O is the most available of the five Type One gold dollars from New Orleans. It is rare in Gem Uncirculated, with perhaps a dozen known in MS65 and another four to six in MS66.
This sharply struck, uber-frosty example exhibits sizzling deep yellow-gold color with intense fiery reddish-gold at the peripheral obverse. Some marks are visible in the upper right obverse field, but this coin is a Gem by even the most rigorous standards,
There have been exactly zero auction sales for the 1853-O gold dollar in PCGS 65 since the summer of 2018, and just two since the summer of 2015.
With most of the finer pieces (a total of five have been graded MS66 by PCGS) off the market in strong hands, this attractive Gem—at half the price of a 66—seems like good value for the advanced New Orleans gold collector or the gold dollar specialist.
