HISTORIC PCGS/CAC MS64 1849-O GOLD DOLLAR
The year 1849 was important for many reasons, not the least of which was the introduction of the smallest of all the gold denominations produced by our country: the gold dollar.
All three Southern branch mints made gold dollars for the first time during this year and they are ranked as follows in order of scarcity: 1849-C Open Wreath, 1849-C Closed Wreath, 1849-D and 1849-O. In fact, the 1849-O is only semi-scarce in nice MS64 although it is very scarce to rare in MS65.
This razor-sharp borderline Gem is 100% original with natural rich yellow-gold and medium green-gold color as is expected on undipped examples.
No PCGS/CAC MS64 has sold at auction. In 2024, two nice non-CAC PCGS MS64’s sold for $6,600 each.
Great value in this grade as a Gem will cost double the price and will not be easily located.
CAC has approved 12 in MS64 with five finer.
