PCGS/CAC 1859 GOLD DOLLAR GRADED MS66+

The 1859 gold dollar is common in grades up through MS64/64+. Gems are much scarcer than is generally believed and any piece approaching the Superb level is both rare and underappreciated.

I can’t recall having owned many 1859 gold dollars whcih compared to this Superb Gem. It is nearly “as struck” with thick, frosty luster below some attractive light to medium orange-gold color. A few very overlookable scrapes in the upper left obverse field narrowly remove this coin out of a possible a possible higher grade.

The only auction comparable is the Bender: 3823 which sold for $5,040 in the Heritage 2022 ANA auction.

This is likely as nice an example of an 1859 gold dollar as you will find.

CAC has approved nine in this grade (including coins in MS66+) with four finer.
