A NICE PCGS/CAC MS64 1851-C GOLD DOLLAR

By a large margin, this popular issue is both the most available gold dollar from Charlotte and it is also the single most available piece from this facility in terms of total known. It is sometimes seen in MS60 to MS62 and it is scarce in MS63. Properly graded MS64 1851-C are rare with likely not more than six to eight known. Gems are very rare with no more than four or so accounted for. I am aware of two or three MS66 pieces including the ex: Elrod coin which Heritage sold for $31,900 as Heritage 2/1999: 6098 and the Simpson coin that brought $27,600 in 2020.

This is a totally original borderline Gem with superb rich orange-gold and green-gold color on either side. A few wispy lines are seen in the left obverse filed as well as a few small ticks but this piece, in my opinion, is a solid 64+ with strong claims to the Gem level. Even when I used to see nice 1851-C gold dollars with some degree of regularity, very few looked like this!

In March 2016, Stacks Bowers sold a different PCGS/CAC MS64 for $15,275 while Heritage 11/2024: 3770 brought $16,800. It was a non-CAC PCGS MS64 originally from the Bass Collection with a severe amount of PVC as seen on numerous coins from this collection.

A wonderful type coin for the collector who wants to own a single very high end gold dollar from Charlotte.

CAC has approved just two in MS64 with one finer (MS66)
