IMPORTANT PCGS/CAC MS62 1858-S GOLD $1; THE SECOND HIGHEST GRADED COIN WITH CAC APPROVAL
I can’t think of many areas of the rare date gold market that are as undervalued and under-appreciated as high grade Type Three gold dollars from San Francisco. The 1858-S is a perfect example. Here is a coin whose rarity in full MS60 and finer rivals many of the comparable Charlotte and Dahlonega issues at around 1/3 to a 1/2 of the price. I doubt of more than six or seven legitimately Uncirculated 1858-S dollars exist and in MS62 this a rarity There is a single coin graded MS65 (last sold as Heritage 11/2020: 3078 at $36,000) as well as two in PCGS MS64; one sold for $18,000 in 1/2020 while the other—now in a CACG holder and owned by DL Hansen—brought $25,850. In my opinion, two of the three are overgraded by at least a full point.
This coin is, I feel, accurately graded and it is very unusual as such. It is 100% original and has never had its surfaces “improved” as evidenced by the soft unbroken luster below nice medium yellow-gold color. The obverse lacks the “pop” of the reverse and it shows a few minor scuffs consistent with the grade; the reverse is a full MS64.
The last 1858-S gold dollar to sell at auction brought $9,000 as Heritage 2019 ANA: 4518. It was graded MS62 by PCGS (serial number 25788689) and approved by CAC but it appears to have de-listed from the CAC database.
A wonderful 1858-S gold dollar which will be appreciated by its next owner.
CAC has graded this one coin in MS62 with one finer (CACG MS64)
Ex: Heritage 4/2006: 1562 where it sold for $11,500.
