GEM PCGS/CAC MS65 1851-O GOLD DOLLAR
By virtue of a small hoard of approximately two dozen coins, there are more Gems of this date than for any other New Orleans gold dollar. That said, a true Gem 1851-O is by no means a common coin and these are in demand by type collectors.
This frosty rose-gold and rich yellow-gold 1851-O gold dollar is a Gem by the strictest standards. It shows unbroken luster, a near-total absence of marks and great natural color. If you like razor sharp strikes, you’ve come to the right place as this coin is absolutely hammered.
No PCGS/CAC 1851-O gold dollar has ever sold at auction. Heritage 4/2025: 3098 was graded MS65+ by PCGS/CAC and it brought $11,700. My coin is as nice or maybe even a touch better.
This is the best obtainable quality for the 1851-O at less than $10k and it would make a splendid little type coin!
CAC has approved nine in this grade (this includes at least two in MS65+) with just two finer (both PCGS MS66).
