RARE CIVIL WAR ISSUE PCGS/CAC MS66 1864 GOLD DOLLAR

It is likely that just 100-125 business strikes exist from an original mintage of 5,900. A few truly amazing 1864 gold dollars exist including a mind-boggling PCGS MS69 (!) that sold for $77,625 in 2/2005. More recently, a PCGS/CAC MS68+ realized $70,500 as Heritage 2015 ANA: 4264 and later $73,748 as Legend 7/2020: 71; it is ex Weiner/ Duckor/Virgil Brand.

The current example isn’t too shabby either. It is the sole PCGS/CAC graded MS66 1864 gold dollar and it shows pleasing medium yellow-gold color over very clean, vibrantly frosty surfaces. As is seen on most 1864 gold dollars, there is some slight weakness of strike on the bases of the 18 in the date. A few grade-limiting marks are seen in the left obverse field and there is a small copper spot just in front of the truncation that serves as immediate identification. This is a Gem by anyone’s standards...including mine!

There have been five auction appearances for PCGS MS66 1864 gold dollars since 2003 with the most recent in 4/2024 when a non-CAC piece realized $11,400 in a Stacks Bowers sale.

If you are building a great gold dollar set or if you specialize in Civil War gold, you will quickly recognize the importance of this coin; not to mention its excellent value as a nicer PCGS/CAC coin—even if one is available—will cost multiples of my asking price.
