POPULAR 1855-O GOLD DOLLAR IN PCGS/CAC MS61

The 1855-O gold dollar is very popular due to its status as a one-year type. It is not nearly as rare as its southern cousins the 1855-C and 1855-D which are also one-year types. Around four to five dozen Uncirculated 1855-O gold dollars are extant with the majority of these in the MS60 to MS62 range.

This coin lacks the rub/wear seen on the majority of similarly graded Type Two gold dollars from any of the five mints that struck these. The strike is typical for the issue with some minor lightness seen at the centers while the surfaces are clean. I love the obvious natural color which favors green-gold and light yellow-gold hues.

The only PCGS/CAC MS61 1855-O gold dollar to ever sell at auction brought $9,000 as Stacks Bowers 2024 ANA: 3268.

If you were to step up to an MS63 example of this issue, you’d be looking at a $35,000+ purchase and that is if you can even locate one.

CAC has approved three in MS61 with 12 finer.
