EXCEPTIONAL CAC APPROVED PCGS AU58+ 1858-D HALF EAGLE

The 1858-D is an overlooked date in the Dahlonega half eagle date run. It is scarcer than the 1859-D and 1860-D and it becomes rare in properly graded AU58. There are an estimated nine to eleven known in Uncirculated and the last Mint State coin to sell at auction was a PCGS MS62+ which brought $22,800 as Heritage 4/2021: 5122

This is an absolutely amazing coin which (and I am NOT exaggerating) has the visual appearance of an MS63 or an MS64. The surfaces are immaculate and touched with warm, natural golden-orange color which is absolutely correct for the date. The light rub seen on the high spots are almost certainly from storage and the eye appeal is totally off the charts.

This is the only AU58+ for this date at PCGS. In March 2019, a PCGS/CAC AU58 example sold for $7,638 as Legend 3/2019: 413 but it was nowhere near as nice as super high-end 1858-D half eagle.

Here is a really special 1858-D half eagle which will fit well in nearly any high quality set of Dahlonega half eagles.

CAC has approved just five in AU58 with a single coin finer (MS61).
