CHOICE COLLECTOR GRADE 1839-D HALF EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

Variety 2-A.

The 1839-D is among the most sought-after half eagles from Dahlonega due to its status as a one-year type coin. It is scarce in all grades and with nice EF and AU examples out of the price range for many collecting budgets, choice collector grade pieces are in especially strong demand.

This deep green-gold example is fresh to the market and it shows even color with some dirt lodged in the recesses attesting to its originality. The typical weakness of strike at the centers has given the unfair impression of extensive wear and the wing detail on the reverse suggest that this coin could very easily have graded a bit higher.

A PCGS/CAC VF25 1839-D half eagle in an old green label holder—which I graded VF30+ when I viewed it—sold for $10,800 as Heritage 2021 ANA: 4138; it had earlier brought $7,200 as Heritage 9/2018: 3995.

This is one of the few relatively affordable 1839-D half eagles available and certainly the only one with the all-important CAC sticker.

CAC has approved 2 in this grade with 14 finer.
