NICE 1813 HALF EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
BD-1, R-2.
The 1813 is far and away the most available date of the rare Capped Head Left half eagle type. There are hundreds known in the EF-AU range and this is a great choice for type given the rarity of most of the other dates. Nice AU examples are not easy to locate, especially with natural color and choice surfaces.
This is a textbook coin for the grade with natural russet color which changes to a medium olive hue in the fields. The strike is sharp with bold central and peripheral details while the surfaces show minimal marks. The overall eye appeal is excellent.
A total of six PCGS AU53s have sold at auction since 2/12 with just one (this coin) showing CAC approval. Prices have ranged from a low of $8,238 to a high of $9,400.
This is among the more difficult holes to fill in a 19th century US gold type set and this 1813 should appeal to a broad range of collectors.
CAC has approved nine in this grade with 80 finer.
From The Pacifica Collection and earlier sold as Lot 1440 in the June 2016 Goldberg auction where it brought $9,106.
