LOVELY SLIDER 1806 ROUND 6, PCGS/CAC AU58

BD-6, R-2.

The 1806 Round 6 is the single most available date of this design type which makes it an ideal candidate for a type set which includes the popular Capped Bust Right half eagle. Many exist in the higher AU grade range but only a small percentage of these could be deemed “choice.” CAC has approved 14 of the 85 graded between the two services. Allowing for resubmissions, probably no more than 15-20% of the AU58 1806 Round 6 half eagles are CAC-worthy.

This piece is really high end with wonderful deep natural golden-orange color which covers lustrous surfaces. There is essentially no wear from circulation; just some very light friction on the obverse high points. The overall appearance is excellent for the grade and there are no problematical marks or issues with the rims. In fact, I would describe this piece as The Ideal AU58 Capped Bust Right half eagle.

While it seems hard to believe, no example of this variety has sold at auction in PCGS/CAC AU58 has ever sold at auction. In a 9/2021 auction, DLRC may have sold an example graded NGC 55 for $14,650 while Legend sold a PCGS/CAC AU55 for $10,575 in September 2018.

Yes, its wacky that a nice PCGS/CAC AU58 half eagle of this date and subtype is worth around the same price as a non-CAC PCGS MS62 but the market realizes that properly graded AU58 coins are as nice—or even maybe nicer!—than the typical MS62.

I can’t recommend this coin highly enough for the ultra-picky early gold aficionado.

CAC has approved 14 in this grade with 57 finer.
