PCGS AU58 1839-C QUARTER EAGLE
HM-1, R-3. Repunched 39.
The 1839-C is one of just two Classic Head quarter eagles from the Charlotte mint. It is more common than its counterpart the 1838-C in terms of overall rarity, but it is actually more difficult to locate in higher grades. Properly graded AU58s are really scarce, and I am not aware of more than four or five 1839-C quarter eagles which grade MS60 or finer.
This piece has a very nice obverse with good overall detail and pleasing green-gold color while there is ample remaining mint luster. The reverse is less choice with wispy lines seen at the lower portion as well as typical weakness at the right side of the shield. There are fewer marks than normal for the issue with the majority of the abrasions located on the neck of Liberty and in the lower left field on the obverse.
Just three PCGS AU58 1839-C quarter eagles have sold at auction since early 2002, with the two most recent at $15,250 (4/2018) and $15,275 (4/2015).
This issue is almost impossible to locate in PCGS Uncirculated grades and, as evidenced by the small number of auction trades in the last two decades, even PCGS AU58’s are seldom encountered.
