NGC/CAC AU55 1856-S EAGLE

Large S mintmark.

This date is moderately scarce in AU55, scarce in properly graded AU58, and very rare in Uncirculated. For most collectors, a solid-for-the-grade AU55 such as this is a sensible choice for the 1856-S eagle.

This piece is likely from an overseas source but it isn’t as grungy as many S mint eagles of this era which are repatriated. It is lightly worn and relatively free of the typically-seen abrasions with natural medium green-gold color which darkens at the borders. A few spots are seen on the obverse, most notably below the 6 in the date and adjacent to stars one and five.

The only CAC approved AU55 1856-S eagle to ever sell brought $3,360 as Stack’s Bowers 6/2020: 1267. In my opinion, the coin I’m offering here is significantly nicer.

If I were shopping for an early date SF eagle at a price point of less than $4,000, this is the exact coin I would select.

CAC has approved eight in this grade with a dozen finer.
