Normal Date variety, "Granite Lady" Hoard Pedigree
Due to shipwrecks and European finds, this date is more available now than it was a few decades ago. Still, nice AU 1862-S double eagles are scarce and most of the coins graded AU55 have been dipped and are heavily abraded.
This is a very high end coin for the grade with deep, even orange-gold color and some contrasting darkness on the relief details. The surfaces are very clean with no appreciable marks while there is a good deal of residual luster. The reverse, by itself, grades a full AU58 and the eye appeal is far above average.
No CAC approved AU55 1862-S double eagle has sold at auction in recent years.
CAC has approved 14 in this grade with 33 finer.
