CONDITION RARITY 1875 $20 GRADED MS64 BY PCGS AND WITH CAC APPROVAL

Viewed as both an individual date and as a type, the 1875 (as well as any other Type II double eagle) is very scarce in properly graded MS64 and Gems are extremely rare. To verify this, just check the PCGS population figures and you’ll note that there are a total of seven MS64 1875 $20s graded by PCGS with just a single coin—a remarkable PCGS MS66+ —graded finer.

While I have not seen every single MS64 example of this date, I have either owned or viewed at auction the majority of the coins in this grade from both services. In my opinion, the present example has has the best naked-eye appearance with excellent ultra-frosty luster beneath beautiful rich original orange-gold colors seen on both sides. A few small abrasions are seen at the central obverse but I feel that this is a very high end example.

The most relevant APR for a PCGS/CAC—as well as being the sole PCGS/CAC 1875 $20 offered since 5/2016—is Heritage 11/2021: 3701 at $75,000.

If you could even locate a PCGS/CAC MS64 Type Type Type Two double eagle, you are looking at a $250,000 to $300,000 purchase, and that’s if you are even enough a of a stud collector that you have access to a CAC approved MS65.
