CONDITIONALLY RARE 1860-S $20, PCGS MS61
The 1860-S is an unusual issue as it is among the few Type One double eagles from San Francisco whose rarity profile in higher grades hasn’t been forever changed by shipwrecks. It is common in all circulated grades, but it is very scarce in properly graded MS60 to MS61, rare in MS62, and exceedingly rare finer than this. A sole PCGS MS64 in the DL Hansen/Crawford set is by far the best I am aware of.
This example is clearly not from a shipwreck, and it has a pleasing original appearance with even russet color over lightly marked and frosty surfaces. In my opinion, this piece is extremely choice for an MS61, but just a touch too “ticky” to grade MS62. Still, it rates as one of the top 1860-S $20s which I have ever offered for sale.
Four different PCGS MS61 1860-S $20s were sold at auction with every one selling for $9,600.
If you a serious collector of Type One double eagles, you should give this lovely example strong consideration, as a better 1860-S $20 is not likely to come available. In fact, a nice PCGS/CAC MS62 example of this date set a record price for the issue with a sales price of $36,000 in April 2022.
