This variety’s rarity in AU55 and higher grades has taken a pounding in the last decade as the PCGS population figures have risen from 10 in this grade with 15 higher in 2013, to 26 in AU55 with 39 higher as this description is being written in January, 2026. The 1854 Large Date is still rare in MS60 and finer but it is no longer a very scarce issue in AU55 and AU58.
That said, this is an especially nice coin for the date and grade with natural russet colors over moderately marked and still-lustrous surfaces.
The most recent auction trade for a PCGS AU55 is $8,400 which was set by Stack’s Bowers 2/2025: 2166.
At well under $10,000 this example—which is housed in a much older PCGS holder—seems like really fair value.
