RARE AU 1854-S DOUBLE EAGLE WITH ORIGINAL SURFACES

The 1854-S is numismatically significant as the first year of issue for the double eagle denomination at San Francisco. This is a very misunderstood issue as over 75% of the higher grade pieces in third-party holders are from a shipwreck and have matte-like surfaces as a result. Pieces with natural surfaces and an original appearance are very scarce and are in demand.

This fresh-to-the-market example shows pleasing natural light yellow and orange-gold with splashes of rose outlining the devices. There is considerable mint luster and there are only a few small abrasions seen; mostly near the bridge of Liberty's nose.

A PCGS non-CAC AU50 1854-S sold for $11,750 as Heritage 6/14: 4898.

It is hard to find this date in the higher AU grades and, if available, a slightly choicer example with CAC approval will cost in excess of $20,000.

CAC has approved two in this grade with 11 finer.
