CONDITION RARITY PCGS MS62 1884-CC DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1884-CC double eagle is sometimes seen in the lowest Mint State grades but it becomes very scarce in properly graded MS62 (the PCGS population appears well inflated by resubmissions) and it is very rare in MS63.

This fresh-to-the-market example was recently repatriated from Europe and it is obviously original with choice frosty surfaces and totally natural medium orange-gold color. A faint diagonal grease stain, as made, can be seen bisecting the lower portion of the throat while the reverse grades at least MS63 by itself.

The last two PCGS MS62 1884-CC twenties to sell at auction were not choice for the grade and their comparatively low prices ($17,625 in January 2017 and $18,800 in October 2016) were reflective of this. A much nicer CAC approved PCGS MS62 brought $28,200 in June 2015.

If one were available, a properly graded MS63 1884-CC double eagle would sell for over $40,000 and this seems like on overbuy for all but the most dedicated collectors.
