RARE CHOICE AU 1891-CC DOUBLE EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

Only 5,000 were struck and unlike other Type Three Carson City double eagles, the 1891-CC is a legitimately scarce issue. Most of the AU examples that I see are very low end with unoriginal surfaces which are typically riddled with abrasions.

This coin is fresh to the market and to be honest I think it is closer to grading AU55 than it is an AU53. The surfaces are lightly abraded and are semi-prooflike with considerable reflectiveness seen on both sides. Most importantly, this piece hasn't been scrubbed as have so many 1891-CC double eagles and the eye appeal is very high for the date and grade as a result.

Three non-CAC AU53's have sold at auction since October 2012 --the last one in late 2014--and all three realized $16,450. An average quality non-CAC PCGS AU55 would be an easy sell in the $21,000-23,000 range.

This is the first 1891-CC double eagle I have had for sale in many months and I like this example a lot.

CAC has approved two in this grade with 16 finer.
