PCGS/CAC AU53 1864-S DOUBLE EAGLE

Prior to the discovery of high grade examples in shipwrecks, the 1864-S was among the most difficult of the five Civil War double eagles from the San Francisco mint to locate in higher grades. Today, this date is frequently seen in the middle AU grades but not so much with CAC stickers.

This clean, lustrous example could have easily graded AU55 as it shows little wear and has exceptional surfaces for the issue. The sharpness is better than average and both sides show a touch of light orange-gold color.

The last PCGS/CAC AU53 1864-S double eagle to sell at auction realized $3,290 as Stacks Bowers 3/16: 14339.

A choice, affordable example of this popular date.

CAC has approved 9 in this grade with 38 finer.
