OGH 1851-O DOUBLE EAGLE
Housed in an old holder and, in my opinion, an AU53 or even slightly finer by today's standards.
The 1851-O is one of the two most available New Orleans double eagles. It is frequently seen in EF45 to AU53 grades but most of the coins in this range are very heavily abraded and are bright from having been been dipped.
This piece is likely from a large hoard of U.S. gold dated 1840-1900 which was found in Europe around two decades ago. It is very lustrous and it displays deep, natural russet and green-gold hues over choice, lightly abraded surfaces. It would be difficult to find a more cosmetically appealing example of this date!
A "normal" PCGS/CAC EF45 1851-O double eagle sold for $7,050 as Stacks Bowers 2016 ANA: 2421 while the last AU53 of this date to sell at auction was a non-CAC NGC AU53 at $8,813 as Stacks Bowers 5/16: 117.
If you collect New Orleans double eagles, here is your chance to purchase a very special 1851-O.
CAC has approved 22 in this grade with 47 finer.
