CAC APPROVED PCGS EF40 1851-O DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1851-O is one of the two most available double eagles from New Orleans and it is popular with collectors who want an affordable example of this denomination from this popular branch mint. Locating nice pieces at under $5,000 is a formidable challenge.

This choice, evenly-worn example shows nice natural yellow-gold color over very clean surfaces. As expected there i no real luster remaining but this piece is really solid for the grade with a natural appearance which is a welcome exception to this typical well-scrubbed, heavily marked EF.

A non-CAC EF40 sold for $4,406 as Stacks Bowers 2/14: 4406.

This represents the finest available quality for this date at less than $5,000.

CAC has approved 6 in this grade with 72 finer.
