NICE PCGS/CAC AU55 1850 DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1850 is numismatically significant as the first year of issue for the new Type One Liberty Head double eagle. It is not a rare date in any circulated grade but properly graded AU55's with natural color and choice surfaces are not easy to locate.

This is a really attractive example for the grade with choice surfaces, exceptional detail and pleasing natural even green-gold color seen on both sides. There are no detracting marks save for a shallow dig below Liberty's throat and a considerable amount of luster lurks beneath the aforementioned color.

The last PCGS/CAC AU55 1850 double eagle to sell at auction brought $7,638 as Heritage 2/16: 3421.

For most Type One collectors, anything over an AU55 is any "overbuy" for this date. This pleasing, blatantly original 1850 should be the object of much attention.

CAC has approved 24 in this grade with 33 finer.
